His name is Sammy O’Meyer. His talent is the Internet. His problem is
about to become yours. Sammy looks up from his computer screens - 3 27”
plasmas - just in time to catch Wit and Rat sliding through the doorway
of his apartment. Of course he already knew they were coming. He’d been
tracking them all over town via multiple hi-definition Web cams for
hours.
His sister Wit and his best friend Rat were all he had to
call family. They were a close-knit, rag tag trio of the world’s best,
yet undiscovered, computer hackers. But unlike most, these hackers
lived by the Code. More than Java, C++, or XML; their Code was a way of
life. They knew it, lived it, programmed it, and protected it. Yet in
reality, their Code was their honor. These three followed the Eternal
Code of Integrity. They lived to serve and in doing so accepted their
life of obscurity. Perhaps some day it would all change. Perhaps some
day it would all really matter.
“Were you able to track it?” Sammy queried his teammates.
Rat slowly arched his left eyebrow before replying, “Through a series
of switches until it went optical, then we lost it amidst the light
burst.”
“Optical fiber is such a cool yet elusive toy,” added Wit.
“The Net would be nothing without it, but no one really understands all
there is to know about data at the speed of light.”
“Yeah,” sighed
Sammy. “I keep getting really weird results from my latest optical ping
string. It’s almost as if something or someone is intercepting and
twisting my code, but we all know that’s impossible for two reasons.
First, nobody but us three knows my code, and even then only I
understand it completely. And second, no one on Earth has the
technology to intercept code in the Light. There is just no way my code
is being adjusted while it’s in transit on the Fiber flow!”
Sammy
knew something was very wrong here. In all his years guarding the Net,
he had never experienced such a strange phenomenon. Hackers come and
go. Viruses are created and destroyed. But never had he seen this kind
of action. Sammy knew he was good, but none of them had any idea that
he was, by far, the greatest hacker the world had ever known. And in
truth, if Sammy couldn’t figure this one out, there might not be a
world left to protect.
Rat broke the silence, “So where should we
start, Sammy? Just what are we looking for and how can we isolate it
amidst the Light?”
“Do you think we can code ourselves a stinger for this virus?” challenged Wit.
“Whoa here Wit, who ever said we’re tracking a virus?
“Well, Sammy, I just assumed it’s a real nasty virus by the way it corrupts your Netwatcher Code.”
Wit was referring to Sammy’s coup de grace that put an end to global
hacking terrorism once and for all. The Netwatcher code was an
extension of their Eternal Code, watching and protecting the Net from
all destructive hack attempts. The world would never know or understand
who or how the Net was now protected from evil hackers, but these three
unknowns certainly did. And they were more than happy to keep their
secret to themselves, for that too was an element of their Code.
“I’m sure she’s right,” added Rat, wanting to throw his weight in
behind Wit’s diagnosis. “The only question is how it can hide itself in
the Fiber. I mean, it goes in, but it doesn’t always come back out, but
we all know that it just can’t stay in there. Nothing really exists in
the Light. Bits swap with photons and data warps in a light burst at
186,000 miles per second, but nothing remains. That’s basic photonics.”
“Gee, thanks for the lesson, Rat, although we’re still not sure this
thing’s a virus. Or if it is, we’re certainly gonna need more info
before we can destroy it,” lamented Sammy. “Perhaps we should explore
our other options. What if it’s more elemental? What if this thing is
not the product of some unknown genius hacker? Could it be the
byproduct of the optical environment itself? Maybe the optical warp is
twisting the code? Is there any way to determine if the Fiber Channel
is adjusting or even deteriorating under the extreme data load from the
Net?
At this Wit jumped up and exclaimed, “What if it’s alive? You
know, some kind of alternate life force - some creature that’s morphed
itself into something that can live inside the Fiber. Do you guys think
that is even remotely possible?”
Now it was Rat’s turn to jump up
and exclaim, “C’mon Wit, have you lost all your senses? We’re
Netwatchers not Ghostbusters! Are you really suggesting that we have
alien visitors, and that these aliens are living somehow in the Net’s
Fiber Flow?” He rolled his eyes, giving her a completely incredulous
look.
“Look,” seethed Wit. “Your pretty alien looking yourself. And
who’s to say if all living creatures exist only on planet Earth?
Besides, can either of you explain what’s going on in the Light?”
Sammy took a deep, cleansing breath to clear the air before calmly
saying, “Hey guys, let’s remember that we are all on the same team. We
represent the final remnant of the Code Keepers. It’s up to us to work
together to discover, diagnose, and delete this malicious virus. More
than that, we cannot and will not let Evil triumph while we still draw
breath and create code. The Net was allowed to unite this world in
peace and we won’t let some destroying virus or some dark hackers abort
our mission.”
At Sammy’s heartfelt speech, both Wit and Rat seemed
to settle down a bit and consider his words of truth. They all knew
that triumph was predicted, but how? Was this the season and were they
the warriors who would break the iron grip of darkness? Could the world
finally unite in peace? Would the Net now unveil its higher purpose?
Was this virus the final assault upon their Eternal Code? They knew
they had to know.
Sammy gazed out across the shingled horizon to
see the setting sun. The glory of the blazing orb, casting a red, fiery
hue as it fought to cast its rays over the darkening planet, caused him
to catch his breath. He felt, more than heard, the Code Maker speaking
to him now. Yes, it was beginning to form in his mind into a concrete
thought. Sammy was ready to heal the Net.
He spoke without
hesitation. “Every living organism has a code. We know this to be true,
because the Code Maker has revealed it to us. In fact, the whole
universe is held together by His Code, therefore all that exists is
alive. Perhaps not as we view life, but alive nonetheless."
“Yes,” interrupted Wit. “But what are you getting at?”
“I think I might understand,” claimed Rat. “At the core of all things
is its own internal code. Animals each are coded to be what they are.
Plant life and microorganisms are coded as well. Now you’re saying that
even inanimate objects like dirt, rocks, and yes, fiber are a
compilation of their unique code.”
“If that’s true,” shouted Wit. “Then even the Light of the Fiber Flow is alive.”
“And it is sick,” stated Sammy. You see, the Net really does have a
virus, written by no man. This virus is feeding off the Light,
corrupting and destroying all that is good. We don’t need to kill some
virus or destroy some hacker’s code. Instead, we must heal and restore
the Net. We must find the flaw at the core of its code and remove it
once and for all, thereby eliminating the host the virus feeds on.”
“And how do you propose we do that?” asked Rat with a grin, sensing Sammy already had the elusive answer.
“The answer is staring us in the face,” replied Sammy as he looked out
upon the setting sun. “Balance. Rest. Seasons. The cycle of life needs
these. It’s part of our Code. The Code Maker installed this in the BIOS
of all living things. Just as our planet needs both sunshine and
darkness to thrive, so the Net needs both darkness and light. Just as
all living being must have rest, so the Net needs a break. The Net will
simply heal itself if we give it a good night’s rest. That is how the
Code Maker designed all things.
“Cool!” ranted Rat. “We get to unplug the Net!”
“A Sabbath for the system,” added Wit. “Who would have guessed?”
“Yeah,” whispered Sammy. “Who would have guessed?”
